CANNES LION 2022 - HEALTH & WELLNESS WINNER
Inspired by a true story, SKINDEEP is contextualized in the long arc of racism throughout US history, by utilizing news stories about racism from the past century as the canvas for each frame of the hand-painted animation.
WHAT IS RACE-BASED TRAUMATIC STRESS?
Race-based traumatic stress is a very real emotional and psychological reaction to experiences of racism—from racial aversion and hostility to historical roots, systemic racism embedded in society, and even violence. To help establish race-based traumatic stress as a debilitating contributor to mental health in womxn of color who have an emotional and psychological response to negative racial encounters, we sought to inspire people of color and allies to recognize and address it and then to engage in healing.
SKINDEEP not only captures the pain of everyday racism, but also reveals the broader context of how race-based traumatic stress is like an open wound that will not heal, and is reinflicted generation after generation—it is a pain that lies beneath the surface for people of color in America, lying unrecognized, undefined, and untreated. To further contextualize our story in the long arc of racism throughout US history, we utilized news stories about racism from the past century as the canvas for each frame of our hand-painted animation.
